Here are some of my favorite ideas on coaching football to younger kids. They are ones I have developed over time and find always work well. You’ll find that you will maintain your players interest by keeping your football practices fresh and fun.
Equipment Handout Day
Something we always is have an equipment handout day where all the players come in and get to choose their gear. We assign order of choice not by seniority but by percentage of work outs attended over the summer. We have food and drinks and sit around and talk football, expectations, goals, etc. It always works out well because parents and family are invited and it almost becomes an open house type thing.
Relay Races
Instead of running wind sprints, we turn it into a relay race, it creates a friendly competitive atmosphere and the kids don’t realize they are conditioning. We make them about 30 yard sprints, with the lineman and skill positions spread out equally among each team.
Reverse Practice
With grades 4-6 we find that towards the end of the season attention spans are drifting. About 2/3 of the way through the season we have a reverse practice where we swap offense with defense. Kids have a blast playing something different and we often find a player who may not be in a natural position.
