These are just two of my coaching philosophies that are applicable to all ages I have coached and feel should begin the first day of practice. Part of my responsibility as a coach is to be sure each and every player understands all the positions. Additionally it is my responsibility to be sure that each and every player respects myself and their teammates. No bullying will be tolerated.
Understanding Positions
Every drill and practice play should be explained to each position involved so that the overall objective and assignment for each position, up until the whistle blows, is understood by every player. Too often I see players execute a partial assignment with precision (just like a drill they did in practice) and then stop (drill over) in the middle of a play because they don’t know what to do next.
Note: This applies mainly to new players in youth football and although it should be obvious it is often overlooked by coaches.
Team Discipline – Forward/Behind
I believe that in order to have a successful football team, you have to establish discipline. A lot of teams are full of talent but only the great ones are built off of discipline.
Many coaches have their own way of discipline but what works for me is something I call forward/behind. In order to go forward you have to leave negativity behind. Anytime a negative incident takes place in practice (no matter what part of practice) I immediately call attention and condition ( run, crabbing or up down) whatever u desire as a coach but the main point is that this will b done @ the time of the incident and before the next part of practice is resumed.
Forward/behind is a great key to having success in your program.
