In today’s video blog post, I am sharing 2 highly effective football practice drills that work on catching mechanics.   We focus today on one-handed catches and twisting catches as they would occur in real game situations.

One Hand Drill

As a coach, you want to be creative and put your players into positions and situations that they are going to encounter in a real ball game. Obviously, the way that you would like to always catch the ball is with two hands. But because of circumstances, sometimes it makes it necessary to utilize the one-handed catch. So why not add it to your practice plan?

In this drill, we are just using a nice easy fade throw, and the emphasis is to get the ball high, reach with one hand, watch the ball all the way in, and catch it with that one hand, cradling the ball with nice, wide fingers.

Be sure to work on one-handed catches on both the right and left hand sides. The emphasis here is focus, reaching for the football and the good, wide cradle.

Twist Drill

The Twist Drill is great to simulate catches that are made in the ball game. Often times the ball is thrown behind us and short. So the receiver has to always keep his eye on the ball and twist back to make the catch.

The coach or quarterback throws the ball to the back side shoulder so the receiver has to twist back to catch.
