Killer Base Coverage Drill for Quarterbacks and Receivers!

This is a great base coverage drill for quarterbacks and receivers that is used to simulate real game situations. We are simulating a Vertical Go Route, which stretches on the safety’s and throws to the underneath coverage off the linebackers.

This base coverage drill is valuable for 2 reasons:

1. Your receivers can see the seams in the different defenses.
2. Your quarterbacks can work their progression reads, as well as catching and throwing the ball in game/defense-like situations.

In this particular base coverage drill, we have 2 receivers and 2 quarterbacks, so one quarterback will drop and hit the initial read, which is going to be the seam route between the 2 deep safety’s. The other quarterback will take his drop, look to that route, he’ll pretend it’s covered and then work his way to his option route, which will be the slight receiver hooking up between the 2 linebackers.

If you have a full compliment receivers and quarterbacks, you can line them up and go through their 1-2-3 reads, assigning each quarterback their read.

Base Coverage Drill Setup:

Set up your field in a 2 high coverage using the barrels as the safety’s and the cones to simulate the underneath coverage – the corners and the linebackers.
