In today’s video blog post, we continue our discussion on catching with 3 more highly effective football practice drills that finetune our catching mechanics.   We focus today on over-the-shoulder and over-the-head catches as they would occur in real game situations.

Highest Point Drill

As any coach knows, you want to emphasize with your receivers to always catch the ball at his highest point. So by having the coach (or the quarterback) throw the ball in the fade concept, where the receiver has to get both hands above his head and reach for the ball at his highest point as the ball is coming down.

Center Fielder Drill

In this drill, the ball is caught over the opposite shoulder that the receiver is looking. In this situation, the receiver doesn’t have time to turn and twist for the ball, so he needs to be able to pick up the flight of the ball over his opposite shoulder without losing sight of it. You often see this type of ball in deep throws, go routes or takeoffs.

Over The Head Drill

This drill works on the “Blind Catch”, which is a ball that is directly over the head. The emphasis is to simply react to where the football is, allowing players to work on concentration and reaction to a ball that is seen late. Position the quarterback (or thrower) right behind the receiver, and throw the ball directly over the head of the receiver. The receiver then has to adjust to the ball and find it as it appears right on top of him, catching the ball.
